The Technique Behind the Uppercut(s) - Boxing 101 Punching Technique

The Uppercut, like the hook(s), might not be exactly like what you might think. Like the hook, I think society's percpetion of this punch is ruined from Hollywood and movies like 'Rocky' where it's the BIG, LOOPING, HIGHLIGHT type punch that can be seen A MILE AWAY and is always the knockout blow. I'm not suggesting the uppercut or hook can't serve as this type of punch but I am saying it will never be the knockout punch you see in the movies if you throw it like they do in the movies.

My main advice for your uppercuts, and the same goes for your hooks, is to keep your hand/fist close to your body and at no point should you let it get to far away from your own body. It's a QUICK dip of the shoulder, drive all of your weight down THROUGH your lead foot (for your 5) and then quickly bring your shoulder up and let your arm scoop and snap up and back down. It's a very difficult punch to articulate, and much easier to explain in person and with a few good and bad examples. Keep your palm facing your and remeber the goal is to land your with the flat side of your 'knuckle'. Please watch this video for clarification. Drive your weight through your foot and through the ground and quickly bring your shoulder up and 'scoop and snap' your hand and fist, snapping up and then scooping back toward your body so the punch finishes is evolution right back in your Guard where you're protected and ready to slip, roll, block, or throw your next counter.
