How a Coventry Boxer from Cork Ireland went up against and beat the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson in

On the 31st of October 1961 Coventry Boxer, MIchael “Mick” Leahy challenged for the British & Commonwealth welterweight title in London. Mick wasn’t successful that evening but went onto claim the title and had a great boxing career

Born in Cork Ireland which is one of Coventrys 26 twin cities, Mick did go on to defeat the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson in Paisley near Glasgow Scotland which was one of Coventrys rivals for winning the next UK City of Culture on 2021 which is now only 792 days away.

After one of Mick’s fights, the 1st three boxers in the ring to offer him congratulations were Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammed Ali and local fighter Randy Turpin who also won a world title.

Growing up in Coventry I went to school with children of Danny McAllinden, we all cheered Radford based Errol Christie then the likes of Dean Pithie and Richie Evitt came forward, Coventry has produced a long line of quality boxers from its gyms including.

I personally know the Leahy family and remember being told how Mick fought Sugar Ray Robinson.
